SPEAKER
Prof. Nagy Habib
Professor of Hepto-biliary Surgery
Division of Surgery, Oncology, Reproductive Biology and Anaesthetics
MEETING
December 2008
BIOGRAPHY
Professor Nagy Habib is Chief of Service for the Clinical Programme Group for Surgery and Oncology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and is Head of the Department of Biosurgery and Surgical Technology at Imperial College as well as Pro Rector for Commercial Affairs. He has introduced new surgical techniques including a device that minimizes blood loss in surgery, which was spun out of Imperial College (EMcision) and has now been used in over 15,000 patients. Since 2002, Prof. Habib has been working in the field of adult stem cells. He has pioneered research into hydrodynamic gene therapy and is shortly to begin a unique Phase II study of autologous adult bone-marrow derived stem cells in patients with liver disease. The MHRA has granted approval to widen clinical trials to patients with cardiac disease, stroke and diabetes.
TALK
Clinical application of adult bone marrow-derived stem cell progenitors
DESCRIPTION
Adult stem cells, particularly those in haematopoietic tissue, have the ability to develop into endodermal, mesodermal and ectodermal cell types and so could have potential in therapies for liver or heart disease. Prof. Habib will describe a first groundbreaking trial in which five patients with liver disease were treated with bone marrow-derived cells in a phase I safety and toxicity study. He will describe the results and the outcome of a larger Phase II study involving nine patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis. Finally he will outline new clinical trials that are being planned for other clinical conditions.
