| BIOGRAPHY |
Prof. John Martin is a world leader in the use of stem cell therapies for cardiac patients. He studied philosophy in Spain before studying medicine in Sheffield. He then pursued a twin track career in clinical medicine and research. In 2008 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the European Society of Cardiology. In 1997, Prof. Martin founded Ark Therapeutics, a biotech company listed on the London Stock Exchange, which specialises in gene therapy.

Is there a future for gene therapy?

|
Gene therapy has fallen out of favour over the last five years. However, there is now exciting evidence that it works in brain tumours. New understanding in this area will be applied to the potential of cardiovascular gene therapy for the regeneration of vessels and heart muscle. Progress in stem cell therapy for cardiac patients will be compared.
