The London Regenerative Medicine Network wants to see a successful and sustainable regenerative medicine industry in the UK and is providing a forum for all aspects of the new regenerative medicine technologies to be presented and discussed.
Regenerative medicine is one of science’s new horizons. It holds the promise of groundbreaking therapies for patients. It brings together different clinical disciplines and sometimes pushes at the boundaries of ethical strongholds. In 2005 two internationally acknowledged leaders in the field of stem cells and regenerative medicine, Dr. Stephen Minger King’s College London and Prof. Chris Mason, UCL, decided to merge their “South London” and “North London” networking activities into one. The first meeting was held at King’s College London on June 1st 2005 and hosted by the London Biotechnology Network. The Network’s evening meetings are held 11 months of the year and run to a simple but successful formula. Each month the Network showcases three high profile speakers of international calibre with interests and backgrounds from basic science, translational research, clinical sciences, biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry or regulatory affairs. Two hours of presentations are followed by a reception lasting until about 10pm. The Network is open to all and is of particular interest to those engaged in the translation of stem cell research and regenerative medicine including the general public, patients, patient groups, politicians, scientists, clinicians, engineers, businessmen, funding agencies, regulators and the media. The Network is a ‘not for profit organization’ now funded principally by a three year grant from the London Development Agency which recognises the importance of encouraging this initiative to make London the hub of these new technologies in the UK. Additional sponsorship comes from leading law firm Clifford Chance which has a strong life sciences practice. The costs of each meeting are met by funding from industry. The London Regenerative Medicine Network today is the largest and most successful regenerative medicine network in the UK, if not globally, with a membership of over 4,500 and growing. In June 2006, Dr. Stephen Minger and Prof. Chris Mason were recognised by the London Biotechnology Network for their work setting up and running the LRMN and for their roles as ambassadors in the field, raising the profile of London’s excellence in stem cell technology and regenerative medicine.
